Commitment to Environment

Adelaide Hills Wine's Environment Committee is a leader in sustainable wine growing and wine production, supporting all members to continually refine their practices and to reduce their environmental footprint.

The Adelaide Hills Wine Region is one of the most diverse wine regions in Australia in terms of climate, soil and topography. The region has an intensive landscape of hills, valleys and flats. This complex landscape creates an infinite array of micro-climates that winegrape growers skilfully match to grape varieties to produce grapes with complex and refined flavour profiles.

Overall, the region boasts reliable winter rainfall and cool dry summers creating an ideal environment for grape growing and wine making. 300 members are scattered across the Hills area, including 90 wine labels and over 50 cellar doors. The Adelaide Hills are acknowledged internationally for premium wines, viticulture and scenery, which is reflective of its unique natural environment.

The AHWR Environment Committee is actively supporting the region’s commitment of sustainable winegrowing and wine production, by supporting all members to continually refine their practices and to reduce their environmental footprint.

The AHWR is committed to leading the way as environmental custodians.

Demonstrating our commitment to the environment

The AHWR environmental projects are encapsulated within ‘Sustainable Wine Partnerships’, our 5-year strategic Environmental Management Plan:

SUSTAINABLE WINE PARTNERSHIPS (EMP)

Why is Environmental Management important for the Adelaide Hills Wine Region?

The Adelaide Hills is in the catchment for the Adelaide metropolitan water supply and is an important environmentally sensitive area with respect to its biodiversity and water quality. The Adelaide Hills Area includes important refuges for native species that have suffered declines in other regions.
Our vision is to be early adopters and leaders in the implementation of ecologically sustainable practices across the region, with the aim of;

  • establishing world’s best practice in environmental management,
  • reducing our carbon footprint, and
  • ensuring the needs and expectations of the wider community and stakeholders are met.

The AHWR is committed to the continual improvement of the region’s environmental performance. Accelerating the adoption of ecologically sustainable practices by its members is critical to the region’s future success and the region therefore has an established Environmental Policy.
To achieve this, the AHWR has developed and is implementing a strategic 5-year Environmental Management Plan, Sustainable Wine Partnerships. The AHWR actively encourages its members to embrace and participate in the implementation process.
The AHWR actively supports the EMP project by dedicating human and financial resources to the process and providing management tools for members to meet their goals.
